Borough Care, marked the International Day of Older Persons by celebrating the rich lives of residents. The International Day of Older Persons is observed on 1st October each year and is a day to appreciate the contributions that older people make to society.
Dr Mark Ward, CEO at Borough Care, says: “During their interesting and full lives, many of our residents have made a very valuable contribution to both their local community and wider society. Through their careers, volunteering or interests they have helped shape the lives of others and have invaluable advice to give, from which we can all benefit.”
Many of Borough Care’s residents have made a valuable impact on society, including Professor George Barrie Wetherill, who likes to be known as Barrie, and Glenys Workmaster. Professor Wetherill, a resident at Borough Care’s Bamford Close in Cale Green, taught statistics at universities across the UK, including Manchester, Newcastle, Bath and Canterbury. Barrie, 87, has had several books on statistics published, which are still available to buy worldwide.
Glenys Workmaster, who lives at Borough Care’s Reinbek home in Davenport, decided to join the Territorial Army as a seventeen year old in 1942; much to her mum’s displeasure. Coming from a family of five boys and one girl, Glenys was her mum’s only daughter. Glenys was promoted to drill sergeant and believes she was firm but fair in putting the women through their paces.
Dr Mark Ward continues: “At Borough Care, we passionately believe that a person’s life shouldn’t come to a standstill when they move to a care home. We encourage our residents to share their experiences and continue to lead an active social life, if they wish, by organising a regular programme of activities and days out to suit all tastes.”
